A Day On The Green - Mudgee

As we hit the fifty days to go mark, and started wondering how we are going to get everything sorted before we head off, we decided to accept an invitation to A Day on the Green at Mudgee with a bunch of old friends.  And what weekend it was.

All set and ready to go - and yes - no camper trailer this time!

Of course if you're going to a concert, the most important thing you need to pack is your tickets...  everything else can be replaced, or you can manage until you get home...

We took off after work on Friday, planning on eating dinner on the way (Thanks to the Thermal Cooker).  All was going well as we pulled through Gunning.  We had decided on the most direct route to Mudgee via Gunning, Crookwell, Tuena, Bathurst, then on to Sofala and Mudgee.

It is a very pretty drive - scenic undulating grazing country, with a bit of dirt road between Binda and Perthville.  We were hoping on being through the worst bits before dusk.  But as they say, best laid plans...

As we just pulled north of Gunning, Jo suddenly remembered the tickets were still on the fridge door!  Argh!!!  Thankfully we were only half an hour from home and we swung around and went back to get them.  But that additional hour of travel had us eating dinner at Crookwell, not Bathurst, and it was well and truly well into Kangaroo feeding time as we trundled north.  Luck was on our side and we managed to avoid hitting any kangaroos, and it was well past bed time when we finally pulled into our friend's place near Mudgee.

A quick set up, and transferring the kids to bed accomplished, it was time to enjoy a quiet beer before pulling stumps and crawling into bed ourselves.

The next morning, our boys woke early (bless them) and we enjoyed a great morning catching up with old friends, before we filled our eskies with food and water and made our way to the Day on the Green.

We had a fantastic afternoon at the winery, enjoying great music and food, before retiring back to our wonderful hosts place.

Back to living in a tent!
Our kids had a wonderful time and were very lucky our hosts were so generous and willing to share their toys.  I was also spoiled rotten with a ride around the paddocks on a very gentle horse.

It was also an opportunity for us to think about the merits of dragging the tent around the country with us, and I think the answer was an overwhelming yes!  With a the addition of the tent and a couple of self inflating mats, we would be able to base ourselves out of a tent with very little extra effort at all.

So a big thank you to our friends who organised it all, and a big best wishes to the ones who couldn't because of the fires still burning!
